The Premonstratensian monastery in Teplá, whose leadership contributed to the establishment and development of Mariánské Lázně, is located about 20 kilometres east of the city. One of the most important Czech monasteries, it was founded in 1193 by a Bohemian magnate named Hroznata as a concession for not being required to participate in the crusade.
