Eureka Tower is like a golden needle in the Melbourne’s sky. Officially opened in October 2006, it is a 297.3 m skyscraper and it’s the Melbourne’s tallest structure, designed by the architectural firm Fender Katsalidis Architects. It is now the second tallest skyscraper in the southern hemisphere and it’s among the tallest residential buildings in all the world.
The tower takes its name “Eureka” because of the Eureka Stockade, a rebellion during the Victorian gold rush in 1854. This fact has been expressed into the project, with the gold crown representing the gold rush and a red stripe representing the blood of the revolt. The blue glass covering most of the building represents the blue background of the stockade’s flag and the white lines also represent the eureka stockade flag. The skyscraper is provided of an observation deck, called Skydeck, on the 88th floor, believed to be the highest public vantage point (285 m) in the southern hemisphere.
