THE Glitter Strip development revival is picking up pace after the council approved a $50 million development.
Yesterday the council approved a 40-storey, 174 apartment building for the corner of Surfers Paradise Boulevard and Markwell Av to be called Markwell Ave Tower.
It was originally planned as a 35 storey project but was revised up after being assessed by council officers.
The development is planned by DDK Developments, a company linked to David Kenny and Kevin O'Brien.
Mayor Tom Tate praised the project as a step forward for the city's flagging building industry.
"This is exactly the kind of job-creating development we want to see happening in our city,' he said.
"It will have a high-level of public transport access once the light rail is finished and will reactivate the streetscape in this particular area."
The tower, designed by Endang Lugowski of DBA Architecture, will feature a recreational area of more than a 1000sq m on level one with lap pool, shallow pool, barbecue facilities, meeting room, gymnasium and lounge.
It will have a three-level basement providing parking for 183 vehicles and accessed from Markwell Ave.
The project comes as part of a new wave of development sweeping the Glitter Strip.
It was approved just a month after work began on the $120 million 41-storey Ho Bee Australia tower on the corner of Main Beach Parade and Highman Street.
