A new and improved bus system will be introduced in Yangon this year to ease daily commuting for passengers, an official from the Yangon regional government said.
"We have modern buses for the BRT (bus rapid transit) system. The BRT system will not only provide comfort for passengers but also includes air-cons. The bus fares will be fixed a rate that won't place burdens on the passengers. In order to fix these fares, we told them that CNG will be provided [for the buses]," said Aung Khin, transportation minister of Yangon regional government.
Aung Khin said the government will invite tenders to private companies that want to operate the BRT project.
The government will also specify bus stops and repair traffic lights for the BRT system and each bus will be run every three minutes. Pyay Rome has been earmarked for this project and buses will run from Kha Yay Pin Junction to downtown, according to him.
"Pyay Road has been selected as the primary [route] for this BRT system. As Pyay Road is wide, the platforms and houses at the roadsides won't be affected. Other roads could be affected as they are close to the platforms and houses. We will continue this project depending on the experiences we get after running the [BRT system]," he added.
The BRT system is part of the Greater Yangon Strategic Development Plan, undertaken by the Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) in cooperation with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The plan includes upgrading the former capital's major infrastructure, public transport, roads, water supply and housing projects.
