Republic of Croatia (Croatian: Republika Hrvatska) is a unitary democratic parliamentary republic (unicameral) at the crossroads of Central Europe, the SE Europe, and the Mediterranean (Adriatic).
Its capital and largest city is Zagreb (1.2 million metro area).
The country is divided into 20 counties (županije) and the City of Zagreb.
Croatia has diverse, mostly continental and Mediterranean climates. Croatia's Adriatic Sea coast contains more than a thousand islands. The country's population is 4.4 million, most of whom are Croats (90%), with the most common religious denomination being Roman Catholicism (87%).
The official language is Croatian (96%) but most speak at least one foreign language. According to a survey ordered by the European commission in 2005, 49% of Croatians speak English as the second language, 34% speak German, and 14% speak Italian. French and Russian are spoken by 4% each, and 2% of Croatians speak Spanish.
