Mártires do Kifangondo is a traditional place in the city and was under reconstruction for better infrastructure and urban renewal.
At its southeast end, the location reaches the Angolan Airforce District, creating a disruptive situation that would also generate some residual spaces and other problems, like traffic jams.
Facing this situation, the Angolan government was open to a solution.
We proposed an urban conversion of a "strip" taken from that government site. Such operation could potentially solve some problems of urban quality, traffic efficiency, while generating new public and private spaces.
The design is based in a long square with a relatively dense series of buildings of mixed use, containing a parking-building, a residential with commercial ground plan, a sports facility, a theater, a school and basic medical care center.
The hospital is located in a remote location nearby Luanda, Angola.
The project was comissioned by the Angolan government to assist mostly children, sometimes with severe and urgent sub-nutrition problems.
The proposal divides the program in 4 wings: the main block (emergency, waiting rooms, etc), an auxiliary block (staff, deposits, washing, etc), the clinic´s block and the nursery.
The nursery is designed to give full visual control over all the children at once, from the center of the room. Those "cells" are arranged around a central room for toys and, among each one, there are rooms for moms that need to spend a night near their children.
The other wings will connect each other to allow for efficient circulation, while setting apart the non-compatible areas.
