Millennium & Copthorne Hotels NZ Ltd plans to convert its Copthorne Hotel Auckland Harbourcity on the Auckland waterfront into a 5-star Millennium in 2015. The companys managing director, BK Chiu, revealed action on the long-held desire to build a flagship Millennium in Auckland at the companys annual meeting, held in the Quay St hotels ground-floor conference room yesterday, but gave little detail. Millennium & Copthorne bought the land under the hotel from AMP in 2008. Mr Chiu said the company had begun work towards getting resource consent, but still hadnt decided precisely how it would upgrade the property. However, with a 5-star hotel to be built in the Wynyard Quarter, it was time to act. We will build a higher quality hotel, very likely retaining this shell. Mr Chiu expected the new hotel would have at least 200 rooms, compared to 187 now. Mr Chiu had a lot more to say about the NZX-listed companys developments (through joint ventures) in China, growing New Zealands marketing of tourism to the Chinese, showcasing New Zealand internationally and rebuilding in Christchurch. Millennium & Copthorne Hotels NZ owns 34% of the Chinese joint venture company First Sponsor Capital Ltd. UK-listed Millennium & Copthorne Hotels plc is also a partner, as is the Ho family of Singapore, previously a major shareholder in Kingsgate International Corp Ltd.
