Bicycling is big in the Netherlands, as most people know.

Dutch people cycle 14 billion kilometers per year, almost as much as they travel by train. It's the third most used transportation mode after driving and public transport.

Statistics:

* Passenger kilometers: 197.2 billion km
* Bicycle kilometers: 14.2 billion
* modal share: 7.2%

However, if you express it in the number of daily trips, the bicycle is the second most used transportation mode at an average 0.78 trips per day per inhabitant (26% of all trips).

There are more bicycles than inhabitants in the Netherlands. Circa 900,000 bicycles are stolen every year. There is 35,000 kilometers of bicycle lanes in the country.
