Johannesburg CBD/Hillbrow tourism

I'm fairly new to this forum but I have followed threads concerning Joburg with great interest.
Never been to SA but the history, urban decay (and rise from it) of gritty Joburg is indeed interesting.

So, I'm on my way to visit abovementioned city for some exploring with emphasis on urban decay, rise from it and of course people who live there.
Focuspoints is CBD/Hillbrow, Ponte, Carlton and Johannesburg Sun.

Problem is that travel guides abt Johannesburg and Gauteng tends to leave this matter unexplored. All they say is basically that this is a no-go area and so on.
I hope to get som tips and advices in this thread from people who actually live (or has been to) in Joburg.

To my questions.

Where should I stay (Hotel)? The hotel does not have to be in CBD, is Melville any good/safe? A drink after a long day is always nice. ;)

How can i safe and easy travel between places. I don't like the idea to drive myself. Can I kinnda rent a taxi for a whole day or at least 4-5 hours?

Is there any possibility to access Ponte?

Can I walk aroud during the day in areas around Carlton Center and so on by myself?

Is there any part of the city where you can go pub crawling in a somewhat safe enviroment?

Any other place of interest the you can recommend on this matter?

And finally abt Hillbrow/Berea, is there any good guides that i can try to contact for a walk in that area

All kinds of answers are higly appreciated and i hope that I have posted in the right part of this forum.
(With safe I mean equal to for instance London or Paris)
