The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) announced last week that the Japanese government made a donation of $4 million to the Voluntary Trust Fund for Assistance in Mine Action in Somalia in 2013.

With support from a number of countries, the UNMAS aims to teach authorities in Somalia, like police officers, about how to identify and dispose of explosive ordnance and offers essential humanitarian support for victims of the weapons.

UNMAS Somalia says it has educated more than 1 Somalis on life-saving measures, as well as destroyed more than 22,000 pieces of unexploded ordnance and anti-personnel mines since 2008. The agency adds that Japanese financial support since 2010 has led directly to the education of 60,000 Somalis and the disposal of 7,000 explosives.

Toshihisa Takata, the Japanese Ambassador to Somalia, commented that his government hopes the donation will allow the people of Somalia to feel a little more safe and secure in rebuilding their lives, and those who have already been displaced will be able to return to where they came from.

The official also said that in order for conflict-affected areas to return to being hospitable, clearing mines and raising the awareness about explosives must be a top priority.
