Harbin is China's 10th largest city located in the far North East in what was once the heart of Manchuria. The city was founded by the Russians and retains some Russian architecture and heritage. It is famous in China for its frigidly cold winters - the January average min low is -23.9°C and the average January max is −12.3°C.
The locals are stereotyped as heavy drinkers, chowing down on hotpot and speaking with some of the clearest and standard Mandarin accents in China.
Also of note, is that the Chinese High Speed Rail network now reaches Harbin as of a few months ago, however in the Winter the trains are restricted to 200km/h rather than the normal 300km/h.
