After a freeze of many years in urban renewal in Jerusalem, is the bottleneck beginning to open? The Jerusalem Regional Planning and Building Commission's subcommittee for objections has approved for deposit a vacate-and-build project between Hebron Road and Bethlehem Road. Progress has also been made on a vacate-and-build project at the Golomb site in the capital's Kiryat Hayovel neighborhood.
The plan approved for Hebron Road permits the construction of 276 apartments in four buildings, which will replace 72 old public housing apartments. The plan applies to a 17-dunam (3.75-acre) site currently occupied by old buildings, and commercial and public space. The plan proposes vacating and redeveloping the site with two 12-storey residential buildings facing Bethlehem Road and two 24-storey buildings facing Hebron Road. A six-dunam (1.5-acre) neighborhood park and a public building will be developed on the rest of the site. Under the plan, 30% of the apartments must be small apartments.
