Allies or not, a big difference between the UK and US military is the way each side names their bits of kits - while a Royal Navy pilot might fly Merlins off HMS Illustrious as part of 814 Naval Air Squadron, a US Naval Aviator in VFA-2 would be assigned to CVW-2 and fly F/A-18s aboard CVN-72. I sometimes struggle to get my head round the US designation system, and desertswo seems equally baffled by the British custom of using names as the primary form of identification for our aircraft.
So, just for shits and giggles, I thought I'd see how everybody would do on a little quiz. All of the following are bits of equipment currently (to the best of my knowledge!) in US Navy service - how many can you identify? One point for guessing ship/aircraft/unit/weapon, two points for type (e.g. destroyer/helicopter/fighter squadron/anti-aircraft missile), three points for full name. No cheating!
